With a decade of experience working at various web design firms spanning from Baltimore to Virginia, working as a freelance designer, and working with local charities, I've attained a broad spectrum of experience. Conceptualizing, designing and implementing graphic interfaces for corporate web sites, intranets and databases just scratches the surface.
I've also worked with creating and integrating corporate identity programs, vector animation, interactive multimedia, e-marketing plans, customized screen designs with CSS, and printed materials, for major corporations, associations, healthcare organizations, travel agencies, non-profit organizations and government agencies.
In addition to the creative side of things, I've been able to supervise workflow and staff for design departments of 2-4 people at any given time, project manage small to medium-sized client workloads on a day to day basis and be directly involved in the strategic planning process for small businesses.
I began teaching in 1998 at Northern Virginia Community College, for their Communication Design program. I developed and taught Web Design I and Web Design II curricula for the Communication Design program's Web Page Design and Web Manager Certificates. I eventually volunteered and helped coordinate internship opportunities for students, and was a member of the school's Advisory Board.
While pursuing my M.A., at the Maryland Institute, College of Art, I was approached by the Continuing Studies program, to advise on the development of their online Web Design Certificate program. While at MICA, I developed coursework and conducted class instruction via the Blackboard system software.
I currently serve as an adjunct instructor at Howard Community College, for the Business and Computer Systems program, where I teach Introduction to Web Authoring. I am working with the department on a marketing brochure piece that will be distributed as part of a promotional marketing program this fall.
I currently am exploring options for pursuing my M.F.A. at various schools in the region. I hope to explore digital media as a method of establishing social awareness and education through art and media.
I completed my M.A. in Digital Arts in 2000 from the Maryland Institute, College of Art. My major Concentration was Digital Arts with a focus on Creative Website Development. While studying at MICA, I developed an online, interactive, album website for
the universal study of diversity, identity and post-memory in the family album. Click here to view "What Is Family?"
In addition, I also hold a B.A. in Mass Communications from James Madison University. While at JMU I was enrolled in the school of Media Arts and explored coursework in journalism, design, and creative writing.
I believe sharing knowledge and encouraging young people to take an interest in online technology is essential in today's world. I am an avid member of the DC Web Women technology group and mailing list - an active community of women in technology in the DC/MD/VA metro area. I've been a planner, and instructor for their past GROW events - organized training days that introduce middle school aged girls to technology and the web.
This past spring, I volunteered with UMBC's Center for Women in Technology to help market their Computer Mania Day program through email blasts and flyer distribution. I recently joined the Maryland Federation for the Arts, and look forward to volunteering time with their organization.
I volunteered for various Taste of the Nation's Washington, DC, charity events (benefiting Strength.org), and created a dynamic, animated invitation, in addition to spearheading their email marketing program.
I am also a member of the Art Directors Club of Metro Washington (ADCMW), the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), the Chronicle of Higher Education (Chronicle) and the College Art Association (CAA).
I am a member of the Fabulous Feminists book club, an amatuer potter, a yogi in training, and a finisher in the 2000 AIDS Marathon (benefiting the Whitman Walker Clinic) as well as the 2002 Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk (benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation).
